About a year ago, enStratus opened up the cloud abstraction layer we use to make enStratus a cross-cloud platform. This library goes under the name Dasein Cloud, and it is freely available under the terms of the Apache License. The way we architected enStratus, it learns about the features of the underlying cloud provider by querying Dasein Cloud and then displaying the appropriate web interface.
Today, enStratus CTO George Reese wrote an entry in his blog about Dasein Cloud support for the vCloud API as it is implemented for the Terremark vCloud Express public cloud. We thought we'd describe what Dasein Cloud + vCloud means for enStratus.
Most immediately, Dasein Cloud support for the vCloud API means enStratus will be rolling out support for Terremark's vCloud Express in our next update at the end of the month. As an enStratus customer, you can sign up for a vCloud Express account with Terremark and begin managing your Terremark environment through enStratus. You can setup systems that operate across vCloud Express and your primary cloud, and you can setup disaster recovery mechanisms between the clouds.
Do to the market presence of VMware in managed service providers, we expect the number of vCloud-based cloud providers to expand rapidly during 2010. Because Dasein Cloud supports the vCloud API, enStratus can immediately support any of these clouds as they come into being.
